You want to get started making digital paintings too, but you don’t know where to start? In this article I will show you how to get started with digital art. The great thing is that making digital art doesn’t have to be expensive, it could be you already have most of the equipment you need!

I haven’t tried out all the products that I show as examples in this article. I’d always recommend reading some reviews of products to make a considered choice. Also, the prices are only an indication, click the link if you want to see the exact price of a product.

At the end of this article you will find the best way to get started with digital art in my opinion. However, that’s just my opinion of course, take from this article what you need and make a considered choice based on your personal situation. Finally, if you have any questions, be sure to ask them!

A graphic tablet works a bit like a mouse and needs to be attached to your PC or laptop. You can draw on the surface of the graphic tablet using a special stylus (some variants need to be charged, others don’t). The surface of the graphic tablet reflect your screen. So when you put your stylus in the upper right corner of the surface, you will find your cursor in the upper right corner of your screen.

They are relatively cheap, actually you can get a decent graphic tablet for around $50 – $100. Wacom graphic tablets are seen as the industry standard, but when you get started with digital art, I would advise getting a low budget graphic tablet, they can do a great job.

I’d recommend getting a graphic tablet at A5 size, this is large enough to make fluid strokes (A5 is around 5.8″ x 8.3″).

If you want to make digital art on your computer, but don’t want to use a graphic tablet, then a graphic display might be an option for you. They are more expensive than a graphic tablet, but let you draw and paint directly on a screen. Perhaps this will feel more intuitive to you.

With an all in one tablet I mean a tablet like an iPad (Pro), Microsoft Surface Pro or Android tablet. There are many drawing apps out there and some of them are free! You might already own a tablet, if that’s the case, then all you need is a stylus to start making digital art. Of course you could draw with your finger, but that isn’t very comfortable and won’t feel very intuitive. Finally, what’s great about all in one tablets, is that you can take them anywhere. You could draw during a trainride, while enjoying a cup of coffee in a cafe or just while relaxing on your couch!

When making digital art on an all in one tablet, you’ll probably want a stylus. Make sure to check the compatibility of a stylus with your tablet before you make a purchase. Another thing to check is if the stylus has pressure sensitivity, since a stylus with pressure sensitivity will give a much more natural feel when drawing.

Below you will find some examples, note that the Wacom Bamboo Tip is compatible with some Android devices, but doesn’t have pressure sensitivity. The Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with the 3rd generation iPad Pro.

Finally, you could get started with digital art on your smartphone. Downside is that the screen of your smartphone is probably pretty small, which makes drawing on it more challenging. Also, you will probably want a stylus to make drawing a bit easier.

Another thing you’ll need when getting started with digital painting, is software or an app on your phone or tablet. Prices for digital painting software range from totally free to super expensive. When getting started with digital art, my advice would be to start off with some free (or low budget) software, just to see if you enjoy making digital art.

Also, the choice of digital art software depends on your hardware, because not all software is compatible with all devices. Procreate for instance, can only run on iPads and Photoshop runs on a PC or a Microsoft Surface Pro for instance.

There are quite some free digital painting programs out there. Perhaps you want to try out one of these programs before you invest in a more expensive program or subscription

This is an open-source program and a good alternative to Photoshop. Maybe it’s not as powerful as Photoshop, but it has a lot of options. At the Krita website you can find tutorials and resources to get started with your painting adventure. You can download the program for free here.

How To Create Digital Art

This is another free digital art program which is great for manga artists. Mediabang Paint Pro lets you create comic panels easily, has a tool for comic page management and finally the programs snap guides will let you create perfect lines easily. Also, this program is available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS! You can download the program for free here.

Another free app and software package is Autodesk Sketchbook. It is available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. The program has a nice, stripped down interface, so you won’t get distracted by all the tools. You can get this digital painting program for free here.

Next will cover some digital painting programs and apps for which you need to pay. Some of these programs or apps are very low budget and some are super expensive! However, in my opinion you really don’t need to spend a lot of money 😉

Adobe Photoshop is used by a lot of professional artists and has a LOT of features. Since it has so many features it can be quite overwhelming though, making it less suitable for beginners. Another downside to Photoshop (and the Fresco app for iPads) is the pricing. Being tied to a subscription might not be what you want, especially when it comes to the Fresco app. You’ll have to pay $9.99 a month while you only need to pay $9.99 once to get Procreate.

Perhaps you got dizzy from all the information in this article, but I want you to be able to make a considered choice when getting started with digital painting. But maybe you just want to hear my opinion and want to know what I would do. Before I can give you a proper advice, I think it’s important to think about how serious you are about getting into digital art. When I got into digital art about 12 years ago, I was totally passionate about it and was willing to invest a decent amount of money. If I would have to start over right now, I would probably get an iPad or iPad Air, an Apple Pencil and Procreate to get started.

Medicaid is supposed to help you, so let’s make it simple.

Pixels are the units of the internet. Every image on your screen is made up out of many, many little pixel dots, and this is what you are‘painting’ with.

Every digital image contains a specific number of pixels, and the size of your canvas is literally just picking how many pixels you want to start with. The bigger your image, the more detail you can add, and the larger you can print. However, you don’t actually need a very large canvas size if you just want to share your work online. However, the bigger your image, the more memory it uses and the slower things might get (this is why the mobile apps have capped canvas sizes).

Print size is an estimate based on your pixel size (the ‘real’ size of the image) and the ‘Pixels/Inch’ measurement (also known as DPI/PPI), which tells the printer how detailed the final image should be. But you don’t need to worry about that unless you are trying to get a really specific printing result.

Do you need to print it? Calculate the largest size and exact aspect ratio that you’ll need and use that so you don’t have to worry going forward.

I’m serious about the aspect ratio, by the way; you can usually fudge the print quality a bit (paintings are blurrier that photos by default so you don’t need to be as picky), but if your actual width:length ratio is wrong? You may have to make some painful cropping decisions as most print places only carry a specific range of paper sizes.

Don’t forget to untick‘Preserve Aspect Ratio’ as that will force your width and height to stay the same relative sizes, so you’ll be stuck in an endless update loop.

Does it need to be high quality and detailed? Probably 5000-15, 000. You’ll need to figure this out as you go, but you can resize your canvas as you work, and you may find you don’t like working at large sizes (as it affect tool size and computer speed).

Or is it just a quick sketchy image for the internet or a lowish quality web graphic? Pick a smallish basic size between 1000-4000 pixels and don’t worry about it. You can go even smaller, but usually you don’t need to.

I generally draw web graphics at twice their final size, which gives me some flexibility if I want to crop it or change the aspect ratio and means I don’t have to worry about quality loss for the fine details.

Bigger is always safer, as you can scale down as needed, but you might not like working at large sizes, so it’s a personal decision. I usually work at around 3000-5000 pixels a side, unless I know I will need a larger image for a specific result (e.g. I can make a small poster out of that, but the quality might not be great. It’s easy to walk into an art store, see a canvas that will fit on that empty spot of the wall and know it’s the canvas you need. But, what about digital art? The canvas looks like it’s the size of my screen, whether it’s small or large. It’s so easy to choose the wrong sizing and make a mistake. So, the question is, what’s a good canvas size for digital art?

For printed work, your digital art canvas should be the same size as your desired final print. Use an inch to pixel converter to find your dimensions in pixels. The size of your canvas designed for the web depends on the platform you plan to display it on. The DPI of your canvas should be at least 150 for web work and 300 for print work.

If you plan to print your work, it really is as simple as choosing a canvas that’s the size of your desired final product. So, if you eventually want to print an 8×10 print, make your canvas 8×10.

If I’m unsure what size I want my final print to be, I take some time and figure it out. That’s how much I care about choosing the right canvas size from the get-go.

To be fair, there have been a few times when I’ve jumped into a piece of art without knowing the exact sizing first. In those case, I aim for a larger canvas than I think I’ll need. Generally, I find it easier to scale my work down when printing, than scaling it up.

This is not always the case so, again, try to figure out your ideal canvas size ahead of time before you get started.

Also, it’s important that you DON’T resize your canvas after you’ve created it. This can cause issues with quality, sizing, and overall results. So, again, decide on your canvas size from the get-go before you get started.

Here’s a chart you can use. These dimensions are based on 300 DPI, which is generally considered to be the minimum DPI for print work. And, as we’ll talk about more in depth in the next section, choose a larger size if you’re not exactly sure what size you’ll want or need.

You’ll notice more quality loss when you scale a small image to a larger size than when you scale a large image to a smaller size. You still want to be in the ballpark, but be in the larger end of the ballpark.

DPI stands for dots per inch. As the name suggests, it tells you how many dots can fit into an inch of printed work (source). So, the larger the DPI, the more dots of ink will be in each inch of your printed final product.

In general, all printed work should be a minimum of 300 DPI, but you can go higher if you plan to print posters and larger pieces of work.

If you change your DPI after you’ve entered in your pixels, it will change your pixel number. The reason for this is because DPI (or PPI) measures your dots per inch. So, if you increase it, your canvas will need more pixels to get the job done.

As long as you know the desired size of your final product and maintain a minimum of 300 DPI, you can let your design program decide what your pixel x pixel resolution will be. As you saw in the chart above, your inch x inch size relates to a specific pixel x pixel size, so you’ll be fine as long as you know one or the other.

Pixels and inches are just two different ways to measure something. One will always translate to the other as long as the DPI remains consistent.

It’s much easier to know that you want a 8 x 10” print than a 2400 x 300 pixel canvas. As long as you have your DPI set correctly, your design program will pick the appropriate amount of pixels for the inches you need.

The reverse works as well. If you only know the pixels you need, your design program will turn it into the proper inches.

Personally, I just set my design to 300 DPI and just go with whatever number I already know. If I’m designing for the web, I use the pixels that are appropriate for a website. If I’m designing for print, I use the inches that I’ll be printing at. The rest just works itself out.

Dell’s Inspiron 3000 series, however, has proven itself to be an exception to the rule, offering quality budget notebooks at value prices. Like the 15-inch Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3505) we reviewed earlier this year, the Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3511) checks many of the boxes we look for in a good budget laptop—including a large 15.6-inch display, an easy-to-swallow $323 asking price, and Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 11. Aspects of the display betray the laptop's budget roots, but it's a decent deal for the money if you decidedly want a Windows machine over a Chromebook.

The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3511) comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, 128GB of solid-state drive storage, an integrated Intel UHD graphics chip, and an Intel Core i3-1115G4 processor. It wades in the shallow end of the graphics pool and comes with half the memory we’d expect of a decent laptop, but the processor is still a step up from the basement-dwelling Celeron CPU used in even cheaper laptops. The 3511 model doesn’t look much different from the 3505, but that’s not a bad thing. The laptop chassis is well-built and solid, and the carbon-black color gives the machine a sophisticated, clean facade. At 3.8 pounds, it’s on the lighter side of the 15-inch laptop scale, though there are even lighter alternatives, like the 15-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop 4.The 3511 measures in at 0.7 by 14.1 by 9.2 inches (HWD), so it’s about average for its weight class. It may be wide, but it's hardly unwieldy.

It’s worth noting Dell’s sustainability efforts have made their way to laptops as well. The company says it incorporates the use of post-consumer recycled plastics into its laptops, though it’s unclear how much has gone into the laptop itself, and where. The packaging tray and packing materials, meanwhile, are made almost entirely of recycled paper.

The capable chassis and design impress for a budget laptop, but the wins don’t stop there. The keyboard is quite comfortable, with just the slightest bit of feedback while typing. You also get a dedicated number pad, and the entire board is even spill-resistant, a welcome addition that I did not put to the test. The buttonless touch pad is wide, and there’s plenty of space on either side to rest your hands comfortably without any accidental contact.

One major difference between this model and the previous 3505 model is the 1, 920-by-1, 080-pixel display. The full-HD, 15.6-inch anti-glare screen is an upgrade from the 1, 280-by-720-pixel resolution of its predecessor and another feather in the cap of this capable budget machine. There is no touch-screen option, but it’s not something you’d expect in this price range anyway. Unfortunately, the screen brightness isn’t that bright, registering a maximum of 261 nits in our testing. That means that despite the higher resolution compared with its predecessor, the laptop still makes images and video look dim.

The speakers, located underneath the machine, are loud and clear for a laptop of this caliber, though hitting maximum volume actually makes the chassis vibrate. As for the quality, it’s fair; tinny, but not unbearably so.

The Inspiron 15 3000 does come packed with ports, though the omission of a USB-C port is disappointing. On the right side, you’ll find an SD card slot, a USB 2.0 port, and an audio jack (a combo-style headphone/mic).

There’s not much bloatware to be found on the computer, aside from a McAfee antivirus app.

The Inspiron 15 3000 has handled well thus far, but how does it stack up to its competition in our benchmark tests? To see, we compared the laptop's results with those of four other budget-priced systems reviewed in 2021: the VivoBook 15 and Laptop L410 from Asus, the HP Laptop 14-dq2020nr, and the MSI Modern 14. Unfortunately, budget laptops normally don't have enough memory to run the tests properly, so we couldn't quantify performance for a comparison as we normally would.

However, the Inspiron 15 3000 did manage to place some numbers on the board, scoring 3, 818 on the PCMark 10 overall test. A number between 4, 000 and 5, 000 is what we look for here in a solid mainstream machine. It doesn't quite stick the landing, but it doesn't land too far off either. The PCMark 10 Storage Test, on the other hand, was a no-go and would not run. We also left out our usual PugetBench for Photoshop benchmark, which doesn't run properly on systems with less than 8GB of memory.

Our comparison starts in earnest with our HandBrake 1.4 benchmark test. HandBrake 1.4 is an open-source video transcoder for converting multimedia files to different resolutions and formats. Because it's such a CPU-hungry task, we don't expect high numbers from budget laptops, which typically use weaker processors with fewer cores.

The Inspiron 15 3000 didn't do that well here, coming second to last, with only the MSI Modern 14 doing worse. Of course, the chances of doing any serious multimedia work on a budget laptop are unlikely.

The next test on our list is Cinebench R23, the multi-core benchmark meant to exercise all of a processor's cores and threads. The Inspiron's Intel Core i3-1115G4 chip does well enough but is bested by the HP Laptop 14's Intel Core i3-1125G4. The Asus VivoBook 15 sat on the bench for this test, as Cinebench would not run on the hardware.

Rounding out the productivity tests is the Geekbench benchmark, another CPU stress test meant to simulate real-world applications. The HP Laptop 14's processor helps it nab the top spot here, but the Dell still manages to best most of the competition.

Integrated graphics chips have come a long way, but graphics tests are still difficult to run on budget laptops due to weak GPUs and a lack of memory. Still, we were able to run one 3DMark benchmark to completion.

The Inspiron 15 3000 did fairly well here, coming out on top of its budget competition, while the Asus VivoBook 15 didn't even make the grade. Night Raid is the more modest of the two test workloads, suitable for laptops with integrated graphics. Time Spy, the more demanding of the two, would not run on any laptop in our comparison group.

The Inspiron 15 3000 also was the only laptop of the bunch that successfully ran GFXBench 5.0, another graphics stress test that runs low-level routines like texturing, and high-level tasks like game-like image rendering to gauge GPU performance. While the other budget laptops came up short, the Dell managed 15 frames per second (fps) during the 1440p Aztec Ruins test but more than doubled its frame rate during the 1080p Car Chase test.
