If you experimented with digital art in the early days of home computing, you probably had something of a frustrating experience. The hardware simply wasn’t up to the tasks we could imagine, and many artists felt that it wasn’t worth the trouble. But those days are long gone – although sometimes working late into the evening, we all still get frustrated with our favorite program.

One of the best things about digital art is that there are so many ways to create it. Whether you love to paint, to draw or to work with photos, there’s a perfect program for you. As a result, I’m going to break down the programs in this review into three main categories: an overall ‘one-stop’ program, a drawing/illustration program, and a painting program. There are many more categories of digital art such as 3D modeling, texturing and video editing, but those are distinct enough that they deserve their own separate posts.

 by far is Adobe Photoshop, thanks to its unbelievably rich feature set and powerful yet intuitive tools. It is unquestionably the gold standard when it comes to photorealistic image editing, but it offers even more beyond that. That is certainly one of the tasks that it excels at, but over the years it has added a huge range of additional functionality that allows you to create almost anything you could possibly want. If you like to dabble in a wide range of digital media or if you want to keep your creative horizons open, Photoshop is the best one-stop choice.

Innovative Technology For Digital Art

After 30 years of active development, the tools it offers are unparalleled, and some of the new content-aware editing tools almost defy belief thanks to their automated editing abilities. You can do everything from editing RAW photographs to creating stunning photorealistic composites to painting and airbrushing original artwork, and it has an impressive set of brush customization options for working with drawing tablets. Photoshop can also create and edit vectors, 3D models and videos at a frame-by-frame level, although these tools are not as well developed as you’ll find in programs dedicated to those tasks.

With all these tools to work from things can get confusing fast, but Adobe has done a great job of allowing users to customize the interface completely. It’s easy to ditch the tools you never use and focus on what works best for your current project, or even hide the entire interface so you can focus on nothing but your image. You can use one of their preset workspaces, or create and save as many of your own custom presets as you like.

The flipside to this impressive functionality is that there are so many features, even one Photoshop expert admitted that she would probably never have time to use them all. I can’t seem to find the exact quote, but it stuck with me because I have often felt the same way. As much fun as it may be to learn all the 3D and video editing tools that are now included, Photoshop’s primary job is working with still, pixel-based images.

But no matter what your project is, there will be plenty of learning materials available to help you develop the skills you need or answer almost any question. Some guides are even built right into the program, and there is a convenient search mode that allows you to look through a database of tutorials and other learning materials. If you can’t find exactly what you need, the incredible number of active Photoshop users will be happy to help out in any of the online forums dedicated to it.

There are many competitors for Photoshop, but nothing has been developed yet that can truly challenge it. There are other great image editors (as you can read about in the alternatives section below), but none of managed to combine the power, precision, huge featureset and total customizability that Photoshop has offered for years. CorelDRAW is actually one of the few graphics programs available today that is almost as old as Photoshop. It is a program specially designed for working with vector graphics, which makes it an excellent illustration tool. It comes with a full set of the tools you’d expect to find in any vector graphics program – various shape tools and a great set of pen and line tools for creating freehand shapes.

As with most vector graphics software, it also functions as a great page layout program, which allows you to quickly incorporate your illustrations into larger designs like posters and pamphlets.

The reason that CorelDRAW managed to edge out Adobe Illustrator in this category is an impressive new tool that was released known as LiveSketch. As you can see in this video, LiveSketch offers a whole new way to create vector graphics by transforming your sketching into vectors on the fly. You can modify and refine vector lines by redrawing them the way you would when sketching with pencil and paper, and it even learns your sketching style

The interface has decent customization options, although you’ll have to dig a bit deeper through the menus to find them than you would in some other programs. There are an excellent set of pre-configured workspaces, however, including one that is designed specifically for touchscreens, a ‘Lite’ workspace for new users, and one designed to appeal to users who have been coaxed away from Adobe Illustrator.

While Corel does a good job of introducing you to the program via helpful built-in tips and guides, you may find yourself wanting a bit of extra help. There isn’t much learning material in the form of books (at least not in English), but a few quick searches online should provide you with everything you need to learn the software. Corel has also developed a solid set of tutorials that are available on the Corel Learning Center to help you get up to speed. Corel Painter is another long-lived graphics program with 30 years of development under the hood, and it’s been refreshed in the new version of Painter. One of the biggest problems with it in the past was that computers of the past weren’t always up to the job, and so you’d wind up with brushstroke lag during painting. Those problems are a thing of the past, thanks to new optimizations and speed improvements – not to mention access to computers with 16+ GB of high-speed ram and CPU clock speeds of 4Ghz!

Painter is by far the best recreation of traditional artistic media in the digital world, and as soon as you get your hands on it you’ll understand. The sheer number of brushes available should be enough to keep you experimenting happily for days, as though you were suddenly dropped into a fully-equipped studio.

Creative arts therapies (CAT) provide a safe and creative environment for older adults to process life experiences and maintain personal growth while aging. There is a growing need to make creative arts therapies more accessible to the aging population, as many have limited access to these services. This need has been catalyzed by the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tele-CAT offers a possible solution. This study explored the experiences of older adults who participated in an online creative process of digital photocollage based on CAT. Twenty-four Italian and Israeli community-dwelling older adults aged 78 to 92 participated in this research through Zoom teleconferencing software. Transcriptions of the sessions and the art produced through the photocollage were qualitatively analyzed through Thematic Analysis. The findings show that the projective stimuli of digital photographs supported older adults’ narratives and engaged them in a more embodied emotional experience. Participant experiences involved artistic enjoyment within a positive and safe interaction with therapists. The creation of digital photocollages allowed the participants to process their life experiences and create an integrative view of their life, a vital developmental task in late life. These results point to the advantages and challenges of tele-CAT for older adults.

Arts And Design Led Innovation In Healthcare

Creative arts therapies (CAT) is an umbrella term for healthcare professions employing the creative and expressive process of art making to foster the psycho-social well-being of individuals [1]. CAT include a whole spectrum of disciplines, such as art therapy, drama therapy, psychodrama, dance/movement therapy, music therapy and poetry therapy, all of which foster the creative processing of emotions and experiences. The therapeutic processes are led by certified arts therapists and are grounded in the triangular relationship between the therapist, the client, and the art process and product [2]. As in other psychotherapies, establishing a safe environment and therapeutic alliance are central factors in the therapeutic relationship in CAT [3]. The aim of the current study was to explore the experiences of older adults who participated in an online therapeutic creative process of digital photocollage as a tele-CAT intervention during a period of social distancing. More specifically, we aimed to better understand how the nature of CAT can be integrated into an online format with older adults.

There are several change factors in CAT which distinguish it from verbal psychotherapy [3]. During the creative process of art making, the physical senses are engaged through relationships with paint, clay, images, movements and sounds. This embodied sensual experience fosters the connection and the working through of emotions rooted in bodily experience [4]. This emotional awareness can be further communicated in verbal and non-verbal ways in the therapeutic encounter [2]. The sensory experience also involves pleasure and relief that makes the exploration of difficult content tolerable [4].

In the therapeutic process of CAT, symbols and metaphors are created and explored [5]. This enables individuals to succinctly craft their inner experiences and express their invisible dimensions [6]. The use of colors, shapes and bodily movements also facilitates concretization, the transformation of abstract internal psychological content into an externalized tangible artistic presentation [7]. Artistic expression, through its symbolic concrete language, helps individuals bring the subconscious into conscious awareness and to communicate it with the self and others [8]. This is also connected to the concept of aesthetic distancing, one of the main change factors of CAT, which refers to an individual’s ability to simultaneously be emotionally close enough to the artistic experience yet distant enough to cognitively reflect upon it [9]. Aesthetic distancing provides a safe space for observing and exploring the emotional experience during the creative process.

Art making is also based on spontaneity, which brings individuals closer to their emotions, thoughts, and imagination [10]. Spontaneity includes vitality, intuition, and the ability to accept each moment as it comes and to respond dynamically to it [11]. Spontaneity induces creativity, which strengthens people’s ability to look at a familiar experience from new and different perspectives [10, 12]. The literature points to an association between creativity and well-being indicators such as adjustment, optimal functioning, and the ability to respond adaptively to stressful situations and changes in life [13].

CAT are also action-oriented interventions that promote active involvement in the creative process, since the participants are actively and physically involved in the process of creating something visible [14, 15]. This process positions the participants in the active positions of “artists” and “creators”, rather than in the passive roles of “patients” or “clients”. In this way, CAT enable individuals to cope better with the stigma attached to mental health services, especially in older populations [16, 17].

There is a growing body of literature concerning the use of creative arts therapy interventions with older adults, and its effectiveness in improving various aspects of mental health [17, 18, 19, 20, 21]. The Dunphy and colleagues (2019) review showed that CAT can support older adults in dealing with depressive symptoms [20]. It pointed to various change factors in the creative therapeutic process that lead to its effectiveness in treating depression that include enhancing emotion processing, increasing social bonding, fostering creative expression and aesthetic pleasure. In addition, CAT for older adults affected physiological and cognitive measurements (e.g., by acting on neurochemicals such as endorphins, and stimulating memories).

Studies show that visual images provide a non-verbal means of expression in the therapeutic process with older adults. The ability to express oneself through these media is also important in cases of decreased cognitive functioning [22]. A review study underscored the efficiency of visual arts therapy in promoting psychological and cognitive well-being among older adults who suffer from decreased cognitive functioning [23]. Studies have shown that using visual images such as photography [24, 25], collages [26], drawing, and video recording [27, 28] can be effective when processing the memories and life stories of older adults. Studies have also shown that creative arts therapies support older adults in processing their life stories and unfinished business from the past [24, 29, 30].

Overall, there is a growing need to make mental health services accessible for older adults, since many have limited access to these services generally [31, 32, 33, 34, 35]. The COVID-19 pandemic with its social restrictions catalyzed this need and underscored the importance of supporting the older population in their homes [36]. Tele-psychotherapy increases the accessibility of mental health services. Thus, it is crucial to develop tele-CAT for the aging population that will make arts-based interventions more accessible, and at the same time maintain the creative nature of the therapeutic process in the online setting.

Tele-psychotherapy is a form of therapy that is conducted through a digital device, such as a smartphone, tablet or computer, by means of a videoconferencing application (such as Zoom, Skype, Meet) or via the telephone. Tele-psychotherapy can overcome some of the barriers that prevent older adults and the general public from turning to psychotherapy, such as physical limitations, lack of transportation, financial difficulties, and social stigma [37, 38, 39]. This is extremely important in the case of older adults whose mobility difficulties can lead to social isolation, which is associated with a decline in mental health [40, 41]. Sometimes, patients feel more comfortable when engaging in therapy from their homes [42]. Nevertheless, therapists have some concerns about tele-psychotherapy [43, 44], which mainly relate to the lack of user-friendliness with the software, difficulties establishing and maintaining the client-therapist therapeutic alliance, lack of confidentiality, and doubts as to its efficacy.

What Resin 3d Printers Are Available In 2022?

The Epson SureColor SC-P900 is one of the more expensive art printers on my list but you get a superb printer for your money. This art printer can deliver some excellent results, including panoramic prints to cut sheets up to 17 by 22 inches (though this requires a roll feeder that's bought separately).

Onboarding is a little mixed; the Epson SureColor SC-P900 is easily setup and comes with connectivity to Mac and PC, as well an on-printer LCD touchscreen to help you manage our prints. The only downside is the ink supplied with the printer won't last long. This is the only downside to a professional art printer that's actually nicely sized and suitable for home use.

The print results speak for themselves – photos and art prints are deep and colours rich and vibrant, as this printer uses an UltraChrome 10 ink system to deliver a vast array of tones – these inks are: Cyan, Light Cyan, Vivid Magenta, Vivid Light Magenta, Yellow, Gray, Light Gray, Violet, Photo Black, and Matte Black. (This does make the Epson SureColor SC-P900 a little more expensive to run than some on this list.)

Best Photo Printers Of 2023: The Best Printers For Digital Prints

But if you're looking for professional results from your prints, and want them to last and not fade then the Epson SureColor SC-P900 is the best on this list, just be aware of the extra costs involved.

Here's another good option for great-looking prints at larger scale. The Canon PIXMA PRO-200 will cost you about twice as much as the iP8750 (number two on our list), but you'll get a corresponding jump in quality when it comes to colour reproduction.

This is a relatively speedy printer, too. It goes up to A3+ and even larger; it'll also do panoramic prints up to 990cm wide. It delivers lovely sharp prints that are dry almost straight away. And it's versatile; working with set of eight inks, it's capable of printing on anything from standard paper to heavier fine art media.

What Is The Best Printer For Photographers?

The Epson Expression Premium XP-6100 is a small, light and cheap art printer that is great for printing off photos and small art works. It's easy to use and incredibly quick, and for the money comes with some excellent features.

In our Epson XP 6100 review we found that it does the basics well – scanning, copying and printing– but also has pre-installed templates to help you get more from these features. It's best used as a photo printer but it can easily be used to print off art, though the compact size means you're limited to A4 prints.

The real downside to the Epson XP-6100 is the cost of replacement inks, which we worked out at around 16p a print, which is slightly more expensive than other printers on this list. So while the XP-6100 is cheaper upfront, it could be more costly in the long-run, depending on how much use it gets.

How To Print Digital Art (with Pictures)

For the price – sub $200 / £200 – the Epson Expression Photo XP-970 represents excellent value for money. It can print up to A3, features scan and copy functions and comes with an excellent app to control all of your prints and ink orders. As well as standard paper formats it features a rear tray for special or heavier paper stock.

The results are excellent, its six-colour printing process offers deep and rich colour pigments and while not the fastest it does print at a decent pace – black and white photos have a 8.5 ppm speed. It's compact but a little heavy for a smaller machine, but once set up and in place you won't mind.

The only real downside to this printer is the cost – while it's a well-priced printer for the quality it offers, the Epson Expression Photo XP-970 only supports Epson ink cartridges, which are expensive. It will also churn through ink too, so beware running costs are a little high. However, if you're printing 10-30 photos a month you'll be fine, anything above this and you may need to look at a more costly printer with lower running costs.

Hp Designjet Z6 Postscript

If you're mainly looking for an all-round office printer, but are likely to need the occasional art print, then the Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 is worth checking out. Its main A4 tray is ideal for loading with ordinary paper for office work, while its rear feed can handle A3+ and heavier media for producing good-looking art prints.

With six dye-based inks, you'll get decent colour reproduction and contrast, although not at such high quality as other printers on this list. On the plus side, this printer is compatible with Epson's XL cartridges, which helps keep running cost low. Just a few months ago, Jazmine Boykins was posting her artwork online for free. The 20-year-old digital artist’s dreamy animations of Black life were drawing plenty of likes, comments and shares, but not much income, aside from money she made selling swag with her designs between classes at North Carolina A&T State University.

But Boykins has recently been selling the same pieces for thousands of dollars each, thanks to an emerging technology upending the rules of digital ownership: NFTs, or non-fungible tokens. NFTs—digital tokens tied to assets that can be bought, sold and traded—are enabling artists like Boykins to profit from their work more easily than ever. “At first, I didn’t know if it was trustworthy or legit, ” says Boykins, who goes by the online handle “BLACKSNEAKERS” and who has sold more than $60, 000 in NFT art over the past six months. “But to see digital art being bought at these prices, it’s pretty astounding. It’s given me the courage to keep going.”

NFTs are having their big-bang moment: collectors and speculators have spent more than $200 million on an array of NFT-based artwork, memes and GIFs in the past month alone, according to market tracker NonFungible.com, compared with $250 million throughout all of 2020. At face value, the whole enterprise seems absurd: big-money collectors paying six to eight figures for works that can often be seen and shared online for free. Critics have dismissed the NFT art craze as just the latest bubble, akin to this year’s boom-and-bust mania around “meme stocks” like GameStop. The phenomenon is attracting a strange brew of not just artists and collectors, but also speculators looking to get rich off the latest fad.

A bubble it may be. But many digital artists, fed up after years of creating content that generates visits and engagement on Big Tech platforms like Facebook and Instagram while getting almost nothing in return, have lunged headlong into the craze. These artists of all kinds—authors, musicians, filmmakers—envision a future in which NFTs transform both their creative process and how the world values art, now that it’s possible to truly “own” and sell digital art for the first . “You will have so many people from different backgrounds and genres coming in to share their art, connect with people and potentially build a career, ” Boykins says. “Artists put so much of their —and themselves—into their work. To see them compensated on an appropriate scale, it’s really comforting.” Technologists, meanwhile, say NFTs are the latest step toward a long-promised blockchain revolution that could radically transform consumer capitalism, with major implications for everything from home loans to health care.

Though no one really talks about “digital” movies or music at this point, with digital distribution methods dominating their dissemination, art remains an analogue-dominated field. Aside from video (which is only part of the story—more on that below), some other common terms used to describe digital art practices include moving image, multimedia, and new media art. But how do you account for other tech-driven or computer-generated practices that may include 3D-printed sculpture, URLs, or conceptually driven network and programming-based practices? As a broad term, however, “digital” is as useful as it gets—able to describe works that begin and end as computer files, or, alternatively, those that use digital technology as part of their process.

We increasingly encounter videos, animation, 3D-prints, and other digital formats in museums, galleries, and art fairs all over the world. In addition to an ever-growing number of videos and installations at major art-market events, such as Art Basel’s “Statements” section this past summer, we are now seeing more initiatives worldwide that are digitally themed or are heavy on digital works. These include the recent New Museum Triennial in New York, featuring Daniel Steegmann Mangrané’s Oculus Rift installation, “CO-WORKERS – Network as Artist, ” currently on view at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and even specialized video and moving-image art fairs such as LOOP and Moving Image. Instagram and Facebook have radically shifted the media landscape. Rhizome and the Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) archive, after decades on the cutting edge, continue to be indispensable resources. Browser-based platforms such as NewHive, Sedition, and DAATA Editions are bringing affordable art to the web. Recently, Apple opened up its Apple TV platform to several art apps of note—among them and DAD (whose co-founders are two of the authors of this article).

The earliest known surviving photograph was taken by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 or 1827, and is the product of one of the greatest technological inventions of the modern era—the camera. Leading to mechanical representation and reproduction, this machine vastly expanded the presence of images in our lives today. That led to moving images, which proved to be fertile ground for artists—from Luis Buñuel to Andy Warhol, Matthew Barney, and eventually to Ryan Trecartin’s first forays on YouTube.

Although an analog video recording system, Sony’s battery-powered and portable Portapak from 1967 was a revolution. Artists such as Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham, and William Wegman made some of the earliest known video works, seizing on the democratic power (manifest in the ability to broadcast to the masses, as Paik did) and intimacy afforded by the medium to document moving bodies as performances.

Moving images also enabled other non-narrative but time-based artworks (think Andy Warhol’s Empire (1964) or Sleep (1963)), some of which have the tableau-like quality of representational paintings. Today, Michael Manning, Tabor Robak, and the Quistrebert brothers, as well as a number of artists making animated GIFs, are but a few examples of artists “painting” with pixels. Others, like Wade Guyton and Petra Cortright, are on the flip side of that, using digital processes to make paintings on canvas or panels.

What about computers? In 1968 the ICA in London staged “Cybernetic Serendipity, ” one of the first major exhibitions articulating the notion of “computer art.” The show included such figures as Frieder Nake, Georg Nees, and John Whitney, considered engineers or mathematicians more than artists. The show kicked off a rapid proliferation of Net art throughout the ‘90s, which allowed digital tools, in the context of art, to progress. That eventually gave rise to more recent developments, such as Cory Arcangel famously altering a Nintendo game cartridge to make his seminal Super Mario Clouds (2002).

The advent of web browsers gave rise to a whole new school of art that presumes internet-based existence is a given—a movement we are now calling “post-internet, ” a term coined by Marisa Olson in a 2006 panel organized by Rhizome. Data mining from network servers has given rise to numerous practices. Ian Cheng, Jeff Guess, and Gregory Chatonsky create live-action or moving image works that are generated in real time from cloud-based or local data. Artists such as Petra Cortright and Molly Soda found their voices on YouTube, and Amalia Ulman hoodwinked everyone with her Excellences & Perfections (2014) performance on Instagram. Nicolas Sassoon, Sara Ludy, and a group of artists associated with NewHive produce animated gifs, and you can even buy a domain name by Angelo Plessas, Claude Closky, or Rafaël Rozendaal. Last but not least, 3D scanning and printing have also found their place in the realm of sculpture, as seen in the radical installations and sculptures of Josh Kline and Jon Rafman. Video, although in many ways still at the digital sphere’s center, is no longer its sole protagonist.
