When an artificial intelligence program can create, within minutes, an aesthetically pleasing digital painting based on a few simple text prompts, it will certainly lead to questions about the “genuineness” or “legitimacy” of a work of art, and about the fate of living, breathing human beings whose livelihoods depend on artistic skills.

Case in point, an AI-generated image recently bested man-made entries at the Colorado State Fair, and it caused an uproar among many artists who felt that the win was unfair. Jason Allen, the flesh-and-bone entity who submitted the work, defended himself by saying he was completely transparent about using AI program Midjourney for the piece.

This question – and a ton of other questions – have been on the team’s minds lately, so we decided to ask Filipinos from the art world and creative industries for their feelings about AI-generated art, and here’s what they had to say:

This review portrays a dynamic developmental trend in the teacher well-being literature in Asia between 1973 and 2021 using a descriptive quantitative analysis approach. A search of the Scopus database identified 168 journal articles across 46 countries and regions in Asia. This number of publications indicated a substantial change in the knowledge corpus, particularly during the pandemic, although overall production was still relatively low. Further results revealed diversity but an imbalance of research location, research type, research methods, data collection techniques, and research foci. A functionalist perspective may suggest that the knowledge base on teacher well-being is at a beginning stage. Recommendations for future research are proposed including cross-region collaborations, more developed research foci, using mixed-method approaches, high-quality qualitative research designs, innovative qualitative techniques, and diverse qualitative data collection techniques.

Teacher well-being (TWB) is essential not only for teachers themselves [1] and their schools [2], but also for the future society [3]. Although there are ongoing debates about the definitions of well-being, one early definition from the World Health Organization [4] seems to be widely cited: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (p. 2). Taken from the positive psychology literature, Van Petegem et al. [5] defined TWB as “a positive emotional state that is the result of a harmony between the specific context factors on the one hand and the personal needs and expectations towards the school on the other hand” (p. 34). Studies in the field of TWB have been reviewed and the definition synthesized as “an individual sense of personal professional fulfilment, satisfaction, purposefulness and happiness, constructed in a collaborative process with colleagues and students” [6] (p. 102). Teachers have frequently experienced a wide range of changes, challenges, complexities, and adversities in their everyday lives. With increasing demands for academic accountability and academic emphasis, scholars and stakeholders have been keener to dig into what school teachers should give their priority to, such as improving teaching quality and student outcomes. However, teacher well-being is believed to have been sacrificed in the current priorities [7, 8]. Therefore, promotion of TWB has become one key solution to maintaining and enhancing quality education, as well as contributing to the sustainable development of teachers, students, schools, and even a society aiming to be a ‘wellness society’ which incorporates constant change and unprecedented uncertainties for a better world [3, 9].

Globalization, within the educational research sector which includes TWB, has created a tendency to ignore the social-cultural environment that, importantly, can “act as a mediator or filter to the spread of ideas and practices across the global resulting their adoption, adaptation or even rejection” [10] (p. 304). The often-dysfunctional results of policy and practice borrowed from the West and applied to the East have already been proved [11].

Many practitioners in Asian contexts have developed a concern for well-being knowledge about, and support for, the teaching profession as TWB has been considered to have been sacrificed for the sake of quality education [8, 12]. Such a necessity has been stressed by academics who have concluded in their research that teachers lack adequate preparation in their lesson planning and are not sufficiently backed by their teacher and professional training programs to cope with the different well-being problems that they might encounter both personally as well as professionally [9, 13]. It seems it is an appropriate time, therefore, for TWB’s knowledge base within the Asia context to be built upon and explored.

A genuinely worldwide knowledge about TWB would potentially inform and support teachers to cope with professional challenges which threaten their well-being, and help us understand how these affect individual teachers, classroom experiences, and schools, and identify possible solutions to support them. Perseverance, however, in the exploration of a research area through combining theoretical as well as empirical systematic examinations is necessary so that the gathering of relevant knowledge as well as discoveries in comprehension is enabled [14]. The tendency of employing stronger and distinct theoretical as well as methodological instruments in order for TWB to be developed has advanced over a period of time [15]. Conceptual instruments include explicitly elaborating upon as well as applying increased and varied theoretical frameworks within TWB research. Methodological innovations have been focused on using additional methodical methods in conducting studies. Through reviewing the various types of studies which are in existence within a certain field, this can be ultimately achieved [16].

This study’s findings will result in approaches for hastening development regarding TWB research and developing capacity, in addition to producing new knowledge [14]. Five aspects are of relevance in investigating TWB in the Asian context. The first relevance is that the construct of TWB is context dependent. McCallum and Price [17] argued that well-being “is something we all aim for, underpinned by positive notions, yet is unique to each of us” as it varies with “individual, family and community beliefs, values, experiences, culture, opportunities and contexts across time and change” (p. 17). Hence, teachers from Asia may hold a different understanding of their well-being compared with their counterparts from the Western contexts. As the research on TWB has been swamped by Western studies, investigations are required from Asian countries that feature differing political, social cultural, and organizational structures. These efforts can produce connections between distinct sorts of TWB as well as contexts.

The second relevance concerns the impact of TWB on teachers themselves, their schools, and society. TWB has been shown to influence individual teachers, particularly their professional values [18], meaning of work [19], their social relations [18], work contentment [20], lifelong learning [21], burnout [22], work commitment [23], and job performance [24]. Moreover, TWB has played a vital role in flourishing schools in the form of teaching improvement, student outcomes, school effectiveness, and educational governance [9, 13, 25, 26]. If you experimented with digital art in the early days of home computing, you probably had something of a frustrating experience. The hardware simply wasn’t up to the tasks we could imagine, and many artists felt that it wasn’t worth the trouble. But those days are long gone – although sometimes working late into the evening, we all still get frustrated with our favorite program.

One of the best things about digital art is that there are so many ways to create it. Whether you love to paint, to draw or to work with photos, there’s a perfect program for you. As a result, I’m going to break down the programs in this review into three main categories: an overall ‘one-stop’ program, a drawing/illustration program, and a painting program. There are many more categories of digital art such as 3D modeling, texturing and video editing, but those are distinct enough that they deserve their own separate posts.

That is certainly one of the tasks that it excels at, but over the years it has added a huge range of additional functionality that allows you to create almost anything you could possibly want. If you like to dabble in a wide range of digital media or if you want to keep your creative horizons open, Photoshop is the best one-stop choice.

Innovative Technology For Digital Art

After 30 years of active development, the tools it offers are unparalleled, and some of the new content-aware editing tools almost defy belief thanks to their automated editing abilities. You can do everything from editing RAW photographs to creating stunning photorealistic composites to painting and airbrushing original artwork, and it has an impressive set of brush customization options for working with drawing tablets. Photoshop can also create and edit vectors, 3D models and videos at a frame-by-frame level, although these tools are not as well developed as you’ll find in programs dedicated to those tasks.

With all these tools to work from things can get confusing fast, but Adobe has done a great job of allowing users to customize the interface completely. It’s easy to ditch the tools you never use and focus on what works best for your current project, or even hide the entire interface so you can focus on nothing but your image. You can use one of their preset workspaces, or create and save as many of your own custom presets as you like.

The flipside to this impressive functionality is that there are so many features, even one Photoshop expert admitted that she would probably never have time to use them all. I can’t seem to find the exact quote, but it stuck with me because I have often felt the same way. As much fun as it may be to learn all the 3D and video editing tools that are now included, Photoshop’s primary job is working with still, pixel-based images.

But no matter what your project is, there will be plenty of learning materials available to help you develop the skills you need or answer almost any question. Some guides are even built right into the program, and there is a convenient search mode that allows you to look through a database of tutorials and other learning materials. There are many competitors for Photoshop, but nothing has been developed yet that can truly challenge it. There are an excellent set of pre-configured workspaces, however, including one that is designed specifically for touchscreens, a ‘Lite’ workspace for new users, and one designed to appeal to users who have been coaxed away from Adobe Illustrator.

While Corel does a good job of introducing you to the program via helpful built-in tips and guides, you may find yourself wanting a bit of extra help. There isn’t much learning material in the form of books (at least not in English), but a few quick searches online should provide you with everything you need to learn the software. Corel Painter is another long-lived graphics program with 30 years of development under the hood, and it’s been refreshed in the new version of Painter. Creative arts therapies (CAT) provide a safe and creative environment for older adults to process life experiences and maintain personal growth while aging. There is a growing need to make creative arts therapies more accessible to the aging population, as many have limited access to these services. This need has been catalyzed by the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tele-CAT offers a possible solution. This study explored the experiences of older adults who participated in an online creative process of digital photocollage based on CAT. Twenty-four Italian and Israeli community-dwelling older adults aged 78 to 92 participated in this research through Zoom teleconferencing software. Transcriptions of the sessions and the art produced through the photocollage were qualitatively analyzed through Thematic Analysis. The findings show that the projective stimuli of digital photographs supported older adults’ narratives and engaged them in a more embodied emotional experience. Participant experiences involved artistic enjoyment within a positive and safe interaction with therapists. The creation of digital photocollages allowed the participants to process their life experiences and create an integrative view of their life, a vital developmental task in late life. These results point to the advantages and challenges of tele-CAT for older adults.

Arts And Design Led Innovation In Healthcare

Creative arts therapies (CAT) is an umbrella term for healthcare professions employing the creative and expressive process of art making to foster the psycho-social well-being of individuals [1]. CAT include a whole spectrum of disciplines, such as art therapy, drama therapy, psychodrama, dance/movement therapy, music therapy and poetry therapy, all of which foster the creative processing of emotions and experiences. The therapeutic processes are led by certified arts therapists and are grounded in the triangular relationship between the therapist, the client, and the art process and product [2]. As in other psychotherapies, establishing a safe environment and therapeutic alliance are central factors in the therapeutic relationship in CAT [3]. The aim of the current study was to explore the experiences of older adults who participated in an online therapeutic creative process of digital photocollage as a tele-CAT intervention during a period of social distancing. More specifically, we aimed to better understand how the nature of CAT can be integrated into an online format with older adults.

There are several change factors in CAT which distinguish it from verbal psychotherapy [3]. During the creative process of art making, the physical senses are engaged through relationships with paint, clay, images, movements and sounds. This embodied sensual experience fosters the connection and the working through of emotions rooted in bodily experience [4]. This emotional awareness can be further communicated in verbal and non-verbal ways in the therapeutic encounter [2]. The sensory experience also involves pleasure and relief that makes the exploration of difficult content tolerable [4].

In the therapeutic process of CAT, symbols and metaphors are created and explored [5]. This enables individuals to succinctly craft their inner experiences and express their invisible dimensions [6]. The use of colors, shapes and bodily movements also facilitates concretization, the transformation of abstract internal psychological content into an externalized tangible artistic presentation [7]. Artistic expression, through its symbolic concrete language, helps individuals bring the subconscious into conscious awareness and to communicate it with the self and others [8]. This is also connected to the concept of aesthetic distancing, one of the main change factors of CAT, which refers to an individual’s ability to simultaneously be emotionally close enough to the artistic experience yet distant enough to cognitively reflect upon it [9]. Aesthetic distancing provides a safe space for observing and exploring the emotional experience during the creative process.

Art making is also based on spontaneity, which brings individuals closer to their emotions, thoughts, and imagination [10]. Spontaneity includes vitality, intuition, and the ability to accept each moment as it comes and to respond dynamically to it [11]. Spontaneity induces creativity, which strengthens people’s ability to look at a familiar experience from new and different perspectives [10, 12]. The literature points to an association between creativity and well-being indicators such as adjustment, optimal functioning, and the ability to respond adaptively to stressful situations and changes in life [13].

CAT are also action-oriented interventions that promote active involvement in the creative process, since the participants are actively and physically involved in the process of creating something visible [14, 15]. This process positions the participants in the active positions of “artists” and “creators”, rather than in the passive roles of “patients” or “clients”. In this way, CAT enable individuals to cope better with the stigma attached to mental health services, especially in older populations [16, 17].

There is a growing body of literature concerning the use of creative arts therapy interventions with older adults, and its effectiveness in improving various aspects of mental health [17, 18, 19, 20, 21]. The Dunphy and colleagues (2019) review showed that CAT can support older adults in dealing with depressive symptoms [20]. It pointed to various change factors in the creative therapeutic process that lead to its effectiveness in treating depression that include enhancing emotion processing, increasing social bonding, fostering creative expression and aesthetic pleasure. In addition, CAT for older adults affected physiological and cognitive measurements (e.g., by acting on neurochemicals such as endorphins, and stimulating memories).

Studies show that visual images provide a non-verbal means of expression in the therapeutic process with older adults. The ability to express oneself through these media is also important in cases of decreased cognitive functioning [22]. A review study underscored the efficiency of visual arts therapy in promoting psychological and cognitive well-being among older adults who suffer from decreased cognitive functioning [23]. Studies have shown that using visual images such as photography [24, 25], collages [26], drawing, and video recording [27, 28] can be effective when processing the memories and life stories of older adults. Studies have also shown that creative arts therapies support older adults in processing their life stories and unfinished business from the past [24, 29, 30].

Overall, there is a growing need to make mental health services accessible for older adults, since many have limited access to these services generally [31, 32, 33, 34, 35]. The COVID-19 pandemic with its social restrictions catalyzed this need and underscored the importance of supporting the older population in their homes [36]. Tele-psychotherapy increases the accessibility of mental health services. Thus, it is crucial to develop tele-CAT for the aging population that will make arts-based interventions more accessible, and at the same time maintain the creative nature of the therapeutic process in the online setting.

Tele-psychotherapy is a form of therapy that is conducted through a digital device, such as a smartphone, tablet or computer, by means of a videoconferencing application (such as Zoom, Skype, Meet) or via the telephone. Tele-psychotherapy can overcome some of the barriers that prevent older adults and the general public from turning to psychotherapy, such as physical limitations, lack of transportation, financial difficulties, and social stigma [37, 38, 39]. This is extremely important in the case of older adults whose mobility difficulties can lead to social isolation, which is associated with a decline in mental health [40, 41]. Sometimes, patients feel more comfortable when engaging in therapy from their homes [42]. Nevertheless, therapists have some concerns about tele-psychotherapy [43, 44], which mainly relate to the lack of user-friendliness with the software, difficulties establishing and maintaining the client-therapist therapeutic alliance, lack of confidentiality, and doubts as to its efficacy.

Here's another good option for great-looking prints at larger scale. The Canon PIXMA PRO-200 will cost you about twice as much as the iP8750 (number two on our list), but you'll get a corresponding jump in quality when it comes to colour reproduction.

This is a relatively speedy printer, too. It goes up to A3+ and even larger; it'll also do panoramic prints up to 990cm wide. It delivers lovely sharp prints that are dry almost straight away. What Is The Best Printer For Photographers?

The Epson Expression Premium XP-6100 is a small, light and cheap art printer that is great for printing off photos and small art works. It's easy to use and incredibly quick, and for the money comes with some excellent features.

In our Epson XP 6100 review we found that it does the basics well – scanning, copying and printing– but also has pre-installed templates to help you get more from these features. It's best used as a photo printer but it can easily be used to print off art, though the compact size means you're limited to A4 prints.

The real downside to the Epson XP-6100 is the cost of replacement inks, which we worked out at around 16p a print, which is slightly more expensive than other printers on this list. So while the XP-6100 is cheaper upfront, it could be more costly in the long-run, depending on how much use it gets.

How To Print Digital Art (with Pictures)

For the price – sub $200 / £200 – the Epson Expression Photo XP-970 represents excellent value for money. It can print up to A3, features scan and copy functions and comes with an excellent app to control all of your prints and ink orders. As well as standard paper formats it features a rear tray for special or heavier paper stock.

The results are excellent, its six-colour printing process offers deep and rich colour pigments and while not the fastest it does print at a decent pace – black and white photos have a 8.5 ppm speed. It's compact but a little heavy for a smaller machine, but once set up and in place you won't mind.

The only real downside to this printer is the cost – while it's a well-priced printer for the quality it offers, the Epson Expression Photo XP-970 only supports Epson ink cartridges, which are expensive. It will also churn through ink too, so beware running costs are a little high. However, if you're printing 10-30 photos a month you'll be fine, anything above this and you may need to look at a more costly printer with lower running costs.

If you're mainly looking for an all-round office printer, but are likely to need the occasional art print, then the Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 is worth checking out. Its main A4 tray is ideal for loading with ordinary paper for office work, while its rear feed can handle A3+ and heavier media for producing good-looking art prints.

With six dye-based inks, you'll get decent colour reproduction and contrast, although not at such high quality as other printers on this list. On the plus side, this printer is compatible with Epson's XL cartridges, which helps keep running cost low. We'd also suggest signing up for Amazon Dash Replenishment, which means printer will automatically order new cartridges for you when ink is running low.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 prints at up to A2, and does panoramic prints up to 1.2m, which makes it the best art printer for large projects.
